Keenan Allen injury update: Latest on Chargers WR who left game vs. Raiders with hamstring injury – Sporting News

Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen has been injured often during his NFL career, and he was banged up again Sunday during LA’s season opener.

Allen was running a short route in the second quarter when he pulled up lame at the end of it. He immediately grabbed the back of his left leg, which is usually indicative of a hamstring issue.

Allen left the game, and the Chargers initially announced he was “questionable” to return because of a hamstring injury. The team later said that Allen had been downgraded to out

At the time of Allen’s exit, he was leading the team with four catches and 66 receiving yards. He had also seen a team-high four targets from quarterback Justin Herbert.

After the game, Allen indicated he didn’t think the hamstring injury was that severe.

“I’m not sure yet,” Chargers head coach Brandon Staley said after the game about the status and severity of Allen’s injury. “I’m going to find out more about his status later.”

The Chargers will rely on Mike Williams and DeAndre Carter to serve as the team’s top two receivers. Carter was productive early in place of Allen, recording a two receptions shortly Allen’s departure. He also scored a receiving touchdown late in the second quarter.

Wideout Joshua Palmer, tight end Gerald Everett and running back Austin Ekeler could also see bigger roles in the passing game with Allen out.
