CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Armando Bacot had all but one of his 28 points after halftime to help No. 1 North Carolina push past the College of Charleston 102-86 on Friday night. The 6-foot-11 preseason Associated Press All-American got just one shot attempt in an opening half that set the tone for an offensively driven game with neither team able to string together defensive stops. But Bacot made 10 of 12 shots after halftime. Teammate Caleb Love added 25 points. The Tar Heels made 20 of 28 shots after halftime for 71%. Dalton Bolon scored 16 points to lead the Cougars, who led 50-43 at halftime and shot 49%.
DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Freshman Kyle Filipowski had 15 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double in as many games, and No. 7 Duke blew out South Carolina Upstate 84-38. Mark Mitchell’s 13 points and Jacob Grandison’s 12 points also gave the Blue Devils a lift, while Ryan Young contributed 11 points and Jeremy Roach scored 10. Duke center Dereck Lively II, the highest-rated recruit nationally in the freshman class, made his collegiate debut by coming off the bench. He had been out since a calf injury sustained in a preseason practice. He flushed dunks for his only two baskets. Justin Bailey scored 13 points for SC Upstate.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Daivien Williamson had 24 points, Tyree Appleby scored 22 and Wake Forest turned back Georgia 81-71. Williamson sank 7 of 13 shots with three 3-pointers for Wake Forest (2-0). Appleby added six rebounds and six assists. Davion Bradford buried all five of his shots and scored 11. Williamson had 15 points in the first half to help the Demon Deacons take a commanding 41-22 lead at the break. Mardrez McBride scored all 13 of his points in the second half and Georgia used a three-point play by Justin Hill and a 3-pointer by Terry Roberts to pull within 73-65 with 1:21 left to play. Two free throws by Appleby ended the Bulldogs’ 18-7 run and wrapped up the win for Wake Forest. Roberts added 13 points and five assists for Georgia (1-1).
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Joe Toussaint scored 18 points, Erik Stevenson added 16 and West Virginia beat Pittsburgh 81-56 in the Backyard Brawl. West Virginia won its sixth straight over Pittsburgh), the longest streak in the series between the schools 75 miles apart. Pittsburgh went nearly five minutes without a field goal, allowing West Virginia to extend a nine-point halftime lead to 56-40. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Freshman Isaac McKneely scored 15 points, classmate Ryan Dunn had 13 and No. 18 Virginia closed the first half on a 32-8 run and beat Monmouth 89-42. The Cavaliers added a 21-2 burst in the second half, never allowing the Hawks to even entertain the idea of making a game of it after trailing 42-21 at halftime. Myles Foster led the Hawks with 10 points, but they all came in the first 11 minutes before he was saddled with foul trouble. Myles Ruth added eight points.
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Taylor Hendricks had 15 points and 12 rebounds, Jayhlon Young scored 17 points, and Central Florida defeated Florida State 68-54. Ithiel Horton added 14 points for the Knights and Lahat Thioune had 10 rebounds off the bench. UCF led 58-41 on Horton’s 3-pointer with 8:14 remaining. The Knights cooled off down the stretch and scored only six points in the final four minutes. Darin Green Jr., who scored 20 points for UCF when the Knights defeated FSU in 2020, led the Seminoles with 17 points. Although Florida State leads the series 11-2, UCF has won the past two.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (AP) — Mason Madsen scored 18 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 15.3 seconds left, and Boston College closed on a 7-0 run to beat Detroit Mercy 70-66. Madsen’s make, following an offensive rebound, gave Boston College its first lead, 68-66, since the 18:49 mark of the second half. Detroit Mercy guard Kyle LeGreair was called for an offensive foul with 3.1 seconds left and Makai Ashton-Langford sealed it with two free throws. It was the second straight come-from-behind victory for Boston College, which trailed 71-65 with 4:45 left in its opener on Monday before edging Cornell 79-77 on a last-second shot by freshman Prince Aligbe. Ashton-Langford, who was scoreless in the first half, finished with 15 points. Jaeden Zackery added 14 points for Boston College.
BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Elizabeth Kitley scored 22 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and No. 13 Virginia Tech pulled away from Bucknell for a 67-41 win. Cayla King, who had 33 points with a school-record nine 3-pointers on opening night, and Kitley combined for eight points as the Hokies closed the half with a 9-2 run to open a 31-23 lead. Kitley had 12 points, but Virginia Tech only shot 36%. Bucknell stayed close by shooting 48% but only shot 35% in the second half. Cecelia Collins led the Bison (0-2) with 13 points.
